Why servo overwrapping?

by

Lots of companies that now build packaging machinery use servo motors. Back in 2001, when we started building our overwrapping machines using servo motors, we had to explain why we were doing it and heard lots of stories of breakdowns or inadequate support on servo  wrappers.

Today most plant managers and engineers understand the benefits of servo controls because they improve accuracy and repeatability in machine performance. The feedback loop that defines a servo motor makes that accurate repeatability a given.

Servos have made it possible for our consumer product customers to run up to seven different packages on one machine and keep their production at levels they like. Servo controls reduce set up time and increase up-time, keeping operators engaged and production higher. Recipes for different packages can be stored in our controls and it can take only 10 minutes to do a complete changeover of package sizes.

The other interesting part of servo-automation is that it has reduced the number of moving parts on our wrapping machines by approximately 65%. Customer service at Package Machinery gets far fewer calls for aftermarket parts on our machines.

Today, a much larger percentage of the cost of our machine is electrical and software but the payoff for our customers in reduced set up time and reduced wear parts is significant.  We have also been able to boost the speed on machines by sizing motors appropriately to the specific task of that specific motor.
