In our diligence to get food companies to reduce packaging material we have overlooked two important reasons that less may indeed be less.
During some informative conversations at a recent trade show, we began to appreciate why reducing packaging is not always helpful. We came across two reasons for manufacturers to want more rather than less packaging.
the need to have enough space to let consumers know important things about the product.
the need for air to function as a cushion for brittle products
The first one applies to specialty products that are for people with food allergies. Information about ingredients and possible conflicts is critical for the consumer.
The second one applies specifically to products that are fragile such as chips. Air contained in the packaging acts as protection for the product.
There are times when more packaging is good for product protection and consumer messaging.
Can you think of other situations when more may be better?
